Penguins go for a stroll

African penguins caught a breath of fresh air as they were out for a stroll through Tokyo's aquarium. Ikebukuro Sunshine Aquarium offer all spectators a chance to get a closer encounter with penguins as they are taken for a walk through the aquariums compound.

During the parade the penguins were separated from spectators, mainly children, by portable fences on wheels which were pushed by the zookeepers. The fence ensures they don't run away and also prevents them from biting spectators.

"I came up with this idea to let people get a close look at penguins walking." said Keeper Masahiro Tomiyama, adding only penguins born and raised at the aquarium can walk outside their cage without feeling stressed by all the attention.

Fur Seals VS Penguins

Fur Seals VS Penguins as seen on BBC's Planet Earth.

Things to think about:

How have the fur seals and penguins adapted to their coastal environment?

What features of the fur seals and penguins have enabled them to survive, and how are they developing further?

What are the needs of the fur seals and penguins?

Penquine and sea otter

I was inspired to upload some footage of my recent visit to the aquarium in Lisbon after reading about the possible decline of the polar bear population (and possible extinction!) due to the accelerating loss of the Artic ice in the NY Times the other day. Dediciated to the polar bears and their survival.

Penguin

This is King Tut, a cool King Penguin at Sea World San Diego.
He is an old bird, about 45 years old I believe, give or take a few years.
